MANAGING IMAP
Ouvrage 9780596000127 : MANAGING IMAP
Virtually everything, not just computers, but all devices are coming
onboard the Internet, and the two principal applications are the
World-Wide Web and E-Mail. The POP3 model for online-only messaging is
being taxed to its limit, and users clearly would like mail servers with
more "oomph". More specifically, the demand is for E-Mail servers that
take advantage of centralized resources to manage mail, rather than heap
more tasks on end-user computers. This clamor has been answered by
incorporating the IMAP protocol into virtually every major E-Mail server
on the market. Those that don't already have IMAP are probably among
those that are planning to do so.
Managing IMAP is a moveable feast of IMAP help. It is a handy guide for
everyday tasks common to most IMAP servers as well as a concise
reference to help you navigate the sometimes sparsely and obtusely
documented open-source software. Whether you want more insight into the
IMAP server, client or utility software, or big-picture strategic
suggestions to get off your legacy system, Managing IMAP is here to
help.
This book is both a conceptual and mechanical IMAP road map. Managers,
system integrators, and system administrators on the front lines of
Internet messaging will find it a valuable tool for IMAP system
provision, maintenance and support. It is also useful to anyone
considering IMAP for their messaging system. Managing IMAP covers the
IMAP protocol, setting up a client, IMAP security, performance
monitoring, and tools. Several chapters are devoted specifically to two
of the most popular servers: the University of Washington server, and
Cyrus, and detailed appendixes cover topics such as TCL, procmail,
Sieve, and sendmail.
About the Author
Kevin Mullet a voracious punster, violinist and gadget freak, is also
know as an Internet Provocateur (or Internet Savant, depending on who
you ask). He has written for Network Computing magazine and is a
contributing author of The Internet Unleashed, 2nd ed. and Tricks of the
Internet Gurus. Kevin has followed his bliss in his career from its
beginnings doing desktop PC support in the waning days of CP/M, Windows
1.x and BITNet, to alternating between being a data communication geek
and UNIX system administrator. He's worked for a national (GTE.net),
regional (Sesqui.net) and local (compassnet.com) ISPs. While in the UNIX
team at GTE.net, he helped engineer various E-Mail systems to take GTE
from 10,000 to over 500,000 users, learning a great deal in the process
about how to squeeze more juice out of the open-source fruits of the
Internet.
Dianna Mullet, rescue SCUBA diver and pianist, began her career as a
physical chemist running molecular simulations on an old Solbourne UNIX
box. That experience got her hooked but good on UNIX. She learned the
art of UNIX system administration from the operator level up. In a few
years, she parlayed her experience as a senior UNIX Sysadmin into a
stint as a C / UNIX software engineer for Raytheon doing hush-hush stuff
that not even her husband knows was all about.
Each day, Kevin and Dianna leave their gadgeted-to-the-hilt home in
beautiful Denton, Texas, climb into their SUV and go to work at the
University of North Texas Computing Center. When she's not bringing
malted milk balls to his office, and he's not bringing her gourmet cups
of coffee to hers, Dianna is the University's lead UNIX Systems
Administrator and Kevin does network security and performance analysis
and runs the firewalls.
Dianna and Kevin live in a multiple-networked home that uses X10 to
detect and control the coffee pot; IP over Ethernet to that neither one
of them is ever very far from a web browser or an SSH client; ADSL to
make everything available from everywhere; and good ol' RS-232 to
control... well, we won't get into that here.
